About Us

The firm started it's operations at 40 Kandahar Street as a bookshop in the 1960s. In 1969, it opened its second outlet in Geylang Serai. The office then moved to Shaw Towers in Beach Road and then relocated to Joo Chiat Complex. The Kandahar Street shop was closed due to refurbishment and renovation works by the authorities in 1992. A warehouse was rented in Eunos to transfer the stocks from Kandahar street. Another retail outlet was opened at Wisma Indah in 1999. The shop in Geylang Serai was closed in 2005 due to redevelopment of the area. The office was then relocated to 548 Changi Road in 2007. On 5th July 1979, the business was incorporated as a private limited exempt company.

The company first published its books in 1963, producing several Malay novels by young writers who are now quite prominent in the Malay literary scene in Singapore and Malaysia. It also publishes translations of Arabic books into Malay Language as a form of spreading knowledge to those who cannot understand Arabic. It also developed the syllabus and texts for the Madrasah Schools textbooks in 1996. These textbooks are still being used today.

The principal activities of Pustaka Nasional is in publishing quality books; distribution to retail outlets in Singapore, Malaysia & Brunei; typesetting services in Arabic, Malay & English and supplying to corporate customers. At the end of March 2008, the company retail outlet was closed as part of the restructuring of the company. The main focus of Pustaka Nasional now will be on publishing and serving corporate customers.
